Places to Visit

With a rich history deeply rooted in the Wild West, the Texoma area has a multitude of historical sites and  museums where visitors can step back in time to see how this area developed economically and culturally. Learn more about how and why the Denison Dam was built, how pilots were trained at a very special Air Force Base, where the railroads met from north to south, the Butterfield Stage and the pony express (ever heard of Fed Ex?)  and even tour a museum devoted to the celebration of Jazz!

Photo Perrin Historical MuseumPerrin Field, now the North Texas Regional Airport, had a
major impact in the growth of the Texoma area.  The Perrin
Field Museum has moved into new quarters at the airport
and has an amazing collection of memorabilia and exhibits
from World War I and II.

Perrin air Foprce Base was active during World War II as a pilot
training airfield.  During the Cold War it served as a combat crew
and flying training base.  The school trained and graduated over
11,000 aircrew members including 49 US astronauts,

tastings of the local vineyards are fun, interesting and educational.

Take a Cruise or Sail off into the sunset

Island Girls sunset cruise on Lake TexomLake Texoma is famous for its sunsets and Eagle watching, so be
sure to book a cruise to experience the best of both!   Sail around the
lake in a replica 1860's Wooden Brigatine Privateer.  She is a double
hulled Mahogany over White Oak ribs with an impressive 60' length
overall and 46' at the water line.  Owners Ron and Tammie Odom
brought the Compass Rose to Lake Texoma in late 2012 where a
special dock was built at Grandpappy Point.  The Compass Rose
is available for Private Sails, Tours, Special Events and Weddings.

One of the main purposes of the Compass Rose's existence on Lake
Texoma is to educate children about the great tradition of sailing.
The ship serves as a floating "school."  They teach not only about the ship, but about the world she encountered
in the 1860's as well as what she taught modern ships.  Truly fascinating for kids and adults as well!

Photo Hot Summer Nights GazeboThe Sherman Symphony, The Sherman Community Players, and
local bands who have gained national acclaim all come together
to provide a rich cultural experience and tons of entertainment.
From June - July, Denison, Sherman and Gainsville come alive
with free music concerts on Thursday or Fridays nights.

Wednesdays thru Sunday, local nightclubs  offer up a vast array of
live musical experiences in Bar and Grill atmospheres that are casual
and fun.  The Texoma area is also home to a number of Bluegrass,
Gospel, Rock and Country music festivals.  Both Winstar and Cocktaw
Casinos bring in top recording artist to their Event Centers, lounges and sports bars.

Mary Jane Farmer described Texoma music this way - "Texoma rocks! And it country-es, and blues-es, and
acoustic-es, and bluegrass-es! In 2010, music lovers farther away from the Red River learned this fact, as
more of the Oklahoma and Metroplex venues, music festivals, and radio stations provided new ears to our
Texoma ear candy."

Of course, there were some incredible acts that came into the area, too, and those just complimented what is
already here. It boils down to this: When you’ve got it, you’ve got it, and Texoma’s got it!"
