Lake Texoma Facts

Completed in 1944, Lake Texoma covers 89,000 acres with over 580 miles of wooded shoreline.  Due to the free flowing current of the Red River channel, Lake Texoma naturally self sustains an incredible striped bass population.

Striper bass were introduced to the lake in 1965 and it is one of only eight inland fresh water lakes in the entire world where striper bass spawn.

Denison Dam and Lake Texoma were built to protect downstream areas from continually flooding and as a power generating facility to provide electricity to the 700 farms in the area.

Today it supplies both water and electricity to residential and commercial users in  much of the North Texas Area.

Lake Texoma Communities

The land surrounding Lake Texoma was originally roamed by Native Americans.
Small towns were eventually settled when the north/south Shawnee Trails was established.  It became one of the great cattle-drive trails between Texas, Missouri and Kansas.  The recently completed Highway 289 roughly follows this original route.

Today these communities offer small town environments with excellent schools, affordable housing all within close proximity to shopping, medical facilities and diversified employment opportunities.  Living close to one of the largest lakes in the country is another reason the Lake Texoma area is a great place to live, work and play.

Lake Texoma Parks and Wildlife

Lake Texoma area State and National Parks offer beautiful camping, marina, boat launch and lodging facilities.
