Welcome to Sherman, Texas

Sherman Chamber of Commerce logoClassic town, Broad horizon

Sherman Texas is currently the largest city in Grayson County, serving as the governmental center.  The Grayson County Courthouse, the Federal courts and the appraisal district are all located in Downtown Sherman,

Known for its historic landmarks, there is a strong determination to preserve the best of the past while stepping forcefully into the future.  One example of this commitment is the Downtown Sherman Preservation & Revitaliztion, a non-profit group dedicated to preserving, promoting and revitalizing downtown.  When the citizens of this small community have a vision - things get done!

Perhaps it is the community commitment of the residents that makes Sherman a special place.  Sure there is affordable housing, a strong economy, shopping, excellent medical facilities, and exemplary schools but what makes things happen are the people.

Home to Austin College and the county seat of Grayson County, Sherman is a vibrant hub of activity.

Sherman is recognized as the crossroad of North Texas - Hwy 82 traveling east-west and Hwy 75 traveling north-south - it is just a hour from major cities in Texas and Oklahoma.

Culture and the Arts

Sherman symphony orchestraSherman Symphony Orchestra

The Sherman Symphony Orchestra began as the Sherman Civic Orchestra in 1966 with community musicians getting together under the baton of Cecil Isaac, professor of music at Austin College in Sherman, TX, to perform the Beethoven First Symphony.

Over time this initial group grew to include professional players and a permanent place on the schedule of Community Series, Inc. concerts.  Performances were given on the Austin College campus in the 700 seat Wynne chapel. In 1992 the baton passed from founding conductor maestro Isaac to Daniel Dominick.  Maestro Dominick has since added concerts to the season, an educational program for area fifth graders, increased the orchestra’s size to more than 70  musicians, and raised orchestral standards.

Now a fine regional orchestra, the SSO is the only symphony orchestra between the Dallas area and Tulsa. In May of 2002 the SSO moved into its new home, Kidd-Key Auditorium, near downtown Sherman.  Performances in this beautiful hall have attracted new and even larger audiences. http://www.shermansymphony.com/

Celebrating the past

Sherman, Texas

Rich past - Exciting Present - Solid Future
Sherman is in central Grayson County seventy-five miles north of Dallas on U.S. Highway 75. The city is also intersected by U.S. Highway 82, State highways 11 and 56, and the tracks of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, Southern Pacific, and Burlington Northern rail lines. The community, which is in the center of the county, was designated as county seat by the act that established the county on March 17, 1846. The town was named for Gen. Sidney Sherman, a hero of the Texas Revolution and one of the state's earliest railroad promoters.

By 1852 400 people lived in Sherman, which "consisted of a row of clapboard business buildings along the east side of the public square," and, among other things, two saloons, a district clerk's office, a doctor's office, and a church. By the end of the decade the town had incorporated and was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route through Texas.
