The Sherman Museum - New Name, New Director
Formerly the Red River Museum, Sherman's Carnegie Library Building comprises an array of artifacts reflecting the history of Sherman, Grayson County and the Red River Valley.
New Director, Dan Steelman said he is excited about continuing the popular programs of the past and developing new events to draw the community into the museum. "My primary goal is to make sure this museum is integral to the fabric of the community," Steelman said. "I'd like to increase the frequency of events and eventually become a place that people want to come and just spend time."
Upcoming events include the Lunch Lecture Series in April with John Lee Boyer. With his acoustic guitar, Boyer will sing songs of the Dust Bowl Days era. In May the lunch series will focus on fossils in Grayson County with experts R.C. Harmon and Ed Swaitovy.
This summer, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the start of the civil War, the museum will feature camp Reeves Blue and Gray, with re-enactors and special exhibits.
The Sherman Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday - Saturday.

William “Bill” Collins, a long-time pro trumpet player in the Dallas scene and a former UNT Music school student is merging his love of Jazz music with his family history in Sherman.
Bill’s dad (also “Bill”) graduated from Sherman High School and then after moving back founded the Sherman High School band in the 1940’s.
By starting The Sherman Jazz Museum, the son Bill is a tribute to not only all the jazz greats and the music that influenced a generation, but also carrying out his father’s dream and legacy.
The museum’s collection centers around material from the Maynard Ferguson estate, which the Collins family purchased in 2006. Collins has donated all of the material to the museum, a 501c not for profit organization. The museum has gradually acquired more and more material over the years becoming one of the largest collections around.

A freight depot and a bar
With the Katy Railroad due into the newly settled Denison in 1872, there had to be a station and freight depot for use by the travelers and mail that no doubt would be coming and going by rail.
So a wooden building was hurriedly put up beside the tracks near downtown. That building had the distinction of being one of the first passenger train depots in Texas this side of Houston and an unusual aspect of it was that it contained a bar, according to early reports.
Only in the wild-and-wooly Denison in 1872 would a bar be installed in a railroad depot so that passengers and even residents could imbibe in the spirits. Read More...
Herald Democrat -
People entering the North Texas Regional Airport/Perrin Field will now be greeted by an eye-catching sight. After three years and more than $30,000, an F-86 airplane was finally hoisted on Friday to its permanent resting place atop a large pipe and positioned in the median of the main boulevard of the airport entrance.
