The Sunday Morning Coffee & Art Club

began over coffee and art talk between artists Steve O. Black, Alfred Robinson, Kay Merritt Bullis, and Larry Matthews. Black, a GCC professor and the Fine Arts Chair, told the others how he missed his Sunday morning  encounters with artists over coffee in the Lower Greenville area when he lived in Dallas. The artists agreed to meet the next Sunday for coffee and the word got out. The group has grown over the year with over forty artists and their friends periodically stopping in for coffee and conversation with other artists.

The group is a mixed crowd consisting of local and regional artists, gallery owners, beginners as well as nationally and internationally shown artists, and friends of artists. Geographically the group is diverse and is representative of the entire Texoma region with artists from Pottsboro, Denison, Sherman, Howe, Gordonville, Whitesboro, Tom Bean, Bells, and Bonham. The make up of the group is always changing. The group gathers on Sunday mornings, sometimes a small group of ten or twelve and at other times as many as twenty-four artists. It is never the same although some are regulars and can be found every Sunday morning in a corner of Panera Bread.

Although the group is currently made up of artists and gallery owners it is open to all who are interested in the arts including musicians, singers, poets, and writers. “There is no forum or set agenda and no admissions requirements, and definitely no by-laws,” states Black. The group meets every Sunday between 9am to 11am at Panera Bread, located in the Sherman Town Center off Hwy 75. It is a come and go kind of gathering with some dropping in between hours but a hard core group of artists enjoy the camaraderie and generally get there early and stay until the conversation comes to an end.
