LAKE TEXOMA This 89,000 acre lake on the Red River is shared by Texas and Oklahoma. It is widely recognized as a top fishing lake, and is one of the most popular recreation destinations in the Southwest. The lake area includes two wildlife refuges, two state parks, fifty four U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed parks, twenty-six resorts, hundreds of campgrounds and a variety of excellent golf courses. Power boating, power sailing, personal watercraft, water skiers and wind surfers all consider the lake an excellent place to have fun.
AIRPORTS Grayson County offers several airports throughout its region. One of the busiest is North Texas Regional Airport (formerly Perrin AFB) is a county-owned public use airport in Grayson County. It is located between the cities of Sherman and Denison It is used entirely for general aviation purposes. As a general aviation reliever airport, unconfirmed reports suggest that the airport might potentially (in the distant future) serve as a third airport for the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to handle travelers from its growing northern suburbs. If this occurs, commercial traffic would be focused on regional jet airline operations. The recently completed extension of State Highway 289 passes the airport on the west side.
The heart of Denison beats to a friendly rhythm, welcoming newcomers with open arms and wide, warm smiles while caring for residents with kindness and compassion. The atmosphere is small-town and down-home; the amenities, first-class and very cosmopolitan; the possibilities: absolutely endless. Numerous art galleries, a host of antique dealers, wonderful furniture and clothing boutiques, cozy coffee shops and restaurants provide a unique atmosphere in one of the state’s premier downtown districts.
Home of the first public school in Texas, Eisenhower’s birthplace, and headquarters of the Katy Railroad, the ice cream soda was invented here. Events galore are enjoyed throughout the year, including the Arts and Wine Renaissance Festival and the Lakefest Regatta. The local hospital, TMC, is generously supported by country music star, Reba McEntire. The new TMC hospital opened in December 2009.
