The heart of Denison beats to a friendly rhythm, welcoming newcomers with open arms and wide, warm smiles while caring for residents with kindness and compassion. The atmosphere is small-town and down-home; the amenities, first-class and very cosmopolitan; the possibilities: absolutely endless.
Numerous art galleries, a host of antique dealers, wonderful furniture and clothing boutiques, cozy coffee shops and restaurants provide a unique atmosphere in one of the state’s premier downtown districts.
Home of the first public school in Texas, Denison is also known as Eisenhower’s birthplace, headquarters of the Katy Railroad, and the ice cream soda was invented here.
Events galore are enjoyed throughout the year, including the Arts and Wine Renaissance Festival and the Lakefest Regatta.
The local hospital, Texoma Medical Center, is generously supported by country music star, Reba McEntire. The new TMC hospital opened in December 2009. We encourage you to visit Denison and stay for a lifetime.
Give it a try. You’ll be glad you did!”

Local Firefighter Wins State Award!
Earlier this month, the Denison City Council presented an unusual award to a member of the Denison Fire Department.
The “Silent Hero” Award is recognition for telecommunicators in the State of Texas. Camp is the DPD’s third winner in as many years. Supervisor Leisa Gailey received the award in 2009 and LaDonna Early won it in 2010.
Krystal Camp, a DFD dispatcher, was presented with the award – a certificate of achievement – from the Commission for SEC by Mayor Robert Brady. Eight of her colleagues, including Fire Chief Gordan Weger, were on hand to see her accept it.

DENISON, TX -- Two former Denison industrial sites, once places that employed dozens, could see change. The JM Plant (formerly operated by The Johns-Manville Corporation) and WJ Smith facilities have been vacant for years, but a few people have expressed interest in buying the properties.
The Denison Development Alliance says both facilities have been for sale for some time. Over the past year, four parties have expressed interested in the JM Plant property.
The company produced transite pipe, which contained asbestos. The facility is no longer in operation. The DDA says all possible buyers for JM seem to have the ability to redevelop the area.
"Whether those will happen or not, who knows but it is interesting that there's been a change in the market place where these companies...redevelopment companies have come into the market in the last 12 months," Tony Kaai said, Denison Development Alliance President.
The wood preserving plant WJ Smith currently only has one party interested.
It's ultimately up to the WJ and JM owners to sell. None of the buyers have committed at this time.
